The FDP wants it and so do the Greens – the SPD is more cautious about the legalization of cannabis. Nevertheless, according to the Hanfverband, the chances of approval have “never been as great as now”. A traffic light coalition in the federal government should now put them into practice, the association demands.
The Hanfverband is calling for a possible new federal government made up of the SPD, the Greens and the FDP to legalize cannabis. Managing director Georg Wurth told the “Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung”: “The chances of legalization have never been as great as they are now.” Wurth pointed out that the Greens and the FDP in particular are in favor of legal, regulated trade in cannabis. “Taken together, the two got more votes than the SPD, which is a little more cautious about cannabis. Here the Greens and FDP have to prevail in the coalition negotiations,” said Wurth.
Specifically, he advocated the controlled distribution of cannabis products in licensed shops to customers aged 18 and over. In addition, in his opinion, the operation of so-called coffee shops should be made possible in Germany, as in the Netherlands. Joints can be smoked in community there.
In their Bundestag election program, the Greens announced that they would like to enable “a regulated sale of cannabis in licensed specialist shops” with a cannabis control law. In its program, the FDP called for “the controlled release of cannabis. We are committed to allowing the possession and consumption of adults.” The ban on cannabis criminalizes countless people, ties up immense police resources and makes it easier to get into harder drugs through illegal contact with dealers.
The German Farmers’ Association sees a possible new source of income for farmers and gardeners through the cultivation of hemp. “If the legal and economic framework conditions are right, that could well be an additional market niche for farmers,” said General Secretary Bernhard Krüsken of the “Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung”. However, he restricted that serious consideration would then have to be given to “how we can protect the growth in the fields from attacks”.
