Paradoxical phenomenon: the proportion of vaccinated intensive care patients is increasing

Corona patients in intensive care units are almost all unprotected. But the proportion of those who become seriously ill despite being vaccinated is increasing. The RKI has a seemingly paradoxical explanation for this: the more people are vaccinated, the more likely it is that someone who has been vaccinated will come into contact with the virus.

According to a report by the Funke media group, the proportion of vaccinated corona patients in intensive care units has increased. As can be seen from a response from the Federal Ministry of Health to a request from the left-wing parliamentary group, 119 of the 1186 corona patients who had to receive “intensive care” in Germany from mid-August to early September were vaccinated against the virus. This corresponds to a rate of around ten percent. In the period from the beginning of February to the beginning of September, the proportion of vaccinated corona patients in German intensive care units was 1.84 percent (210 of 11,419 cases).

The data come from the Robert Koch Institute (RKI). As the Funke newspapers further reported, the increased proportion of vaccinated corona patients in German intensive care units is primarily related to the sharp increase in the number of vaccinated persons overall, according to authorities and experts.

In the meantime, more than 65 percent of the population in Germany have been vaccinated twice against the virus. The RKI explained: “It can be expected that more vaccination breakthroughs will be recorded over time, as more and more people are vaccinated and SARS-CoV-2 is currently spreading again. This increases the likelihood of being fully vaccinated with the virus To get in touch. “

DIVI urges vaccination

According to Funke newspapers, the Ministry of Health highlighted the protective effect of the vaccination against serious illness from Corona. “The fact is that vaccinations protect and a lack of vaccination protection is the main reason why people with a Covid 19 infection have to be treated in intensive care,” said the ministry.

The President of the Association of Intensive Care and Emergency Physicians (DIVI), Gernot Marx, told the Funke newspapers: “The patients with severe and fatal corona courses are in almost all cases unvaccinated.” The vaccination breakthroughs with severe courses, on the other hand, are still in the single-digit percentage range. In addition, the vaccination breakthrough mostly affects people whose “immune system has been weakened by chemotherapy or long-term cortisone treatment, or who are older than 80”.

The intensive care doctor went on to say: “Unfortunately, we are also seeing more and more people under 60 with severe or fatal courses who are not vaccinated”. The following applies: “The corona vaccination is an effective protection against serious illnesses.”
