Investigations after raid: Bundeswehr soldier hoarded illegal weapons

During a raid, the police came across a whole arsenal of illegal weapons, including tank ammunition, in the house of a Bundeswehr soldier. The man was blown because customs became aware of a suspicious package. The investigators have not yet been able to identify any political background.

The Frankfurt am Main public prosecutor’s office is investigating a Bundeswehr officer who has discovered an arsenal. The arsenal was confiscated by investigators on Tuesday during a raid in Aldenhoven in the Düren district in North Rhine-Westphalia, as a spokeswoman for the public prosecutor said. Accordingly, the 32-year-old was investigated on suspicion of violating the Foreign Trade Act.

The reason for this was, according to the information, that he wanted to send a suspicious package to the USA. A silencer was found in it during a customs inspection at Frankfurt Airport. It may have been part of an illegal weapon of war. In a raid, further weapons and ammunition were found on the Bundeswehr soldier. According to information from “Spiegel”, this is said to have included various long and short weapons and large quantities of ammunition without propellant charge, as well as 120 millimeter ammunition such as can be shot down by Leopard 2 tanks.

The propellant charge, apparently expertly removed from the weapons, was rendered harmless by specialists in the garden. According to security circles, there is no evidence of a political background. According to “Spiegel”, the man belongs to the Bundeswehr Center “Counter-Improvised Explosive Devices”, which is responsible, among other things, for the analysis of self-made explosive devices and their defense.
