Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian has shared how the US can best support Ukraine. According to Zhao Lijian, the US should lift sanctions against Russia. This would improve the country’s political and humanitarian situation.
The US is benefiting from its campaign to impose anti-Russian sanctions, while even its close allies are suffering. This was stated by Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian at a briefing on April 6th. The pursuit of anti-Russian sanctions should be abandoned in order to solve the crisis in Ukraine, it said.
Washington is forcing other nations to impose sanctions on Russia, while the developers of those measures are intent on minimizing the cost to the US itself, the Chinese official said. According to Zhao Lijian, the country has put itself in a position that allows them to benefit from the chaos. Literally it said:
“For Europe, the war and the sanctions result in refugees, outflow of capital and shortage of energy.”
Zhao reiterated Beijing’s position that unilateral sanctions harm the world economy and cannot bring peace and security. The spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry underscored:
“If the US really wants to encourage a de-escalation of the situation in Ukraine, they should stop adding fuel to the fire, hand over the sanctions mace, refrain from words and actions of coercion and really promote peace and talks.”
His comments came as the US and its allies ramped up pressure on Moscow after Kyiv claimed Russian troops had been committing war crimes in the Ukrainian city of Bucha. Moscow denied the allegations, saying they appeared to be intended to hamper ongoing peace talks.
Regarding the situation in Bucha, Zhao said a thorough, independent investigation is needed to determine what happened there. The pictures from Bucha are disturbing. However, humanitarian issues should not be politicized, according to the spokesman:
“All allegations should be based on facts and all parties should exercise restraint and avoid making baseless allegations until the investigation is complete.”
The diplomat said Beijing supports any initiative aimed at de-escalating violence in Ukraine. The Chinese side has already emphasized this several times. Earlier, China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi stressed that dialogue and negotiations are the only solutions to the Ukraine crisis.
