YouTube has blocked the channel of the Russian Parliament State Duma. Now more and more politicians in Russia are calling for what has been on the cards for a long time – a blocking of the US video platform in Russia.

Google blocked the Duma TV YouTube channel, which had 145,000 subscribers. That divided the Russian State Duma their website With. According to her, videos posted on the channel have been viewed more than 100 million times. On its channel, Duma TV showed exclusive comments from deputies, broadcasts of plenary sessions and author’s programs.

The Duma editorial team was prepared for a possible suspension and informed its users about the Duma accounts on the alternative platforms Rutube, VK and Telegram. Senator and lawyer Andrei Klischas called the blocking of Duma TV “the Western version of freedom of speech”. He regretted that YouTube made such a decision.

“YouTube is steadily moving towards becoming illegal in our country,” he wrote on his Telegram channel.

Klishas is an influential jurist and Chairman of the Federation Council Committee on Constitutional Legislation and State Building. His words sound like a final warning to Google. The big tech made many enemies in Russia for shutting down many Russian media accounts around the world, including RT. In addition, Google has been fined several times for not complying with Russian legal regulations.

In any case, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova sees the blocking as a provocation – possibly even the last:

“Apparently, YouTube signed its own verdict. Save your content and move it to Russian platforms. And do it quickly,” she wrote on her Telegram channel.

The Russian supervisory authority Roskomnadzor also commented on the blocking and accused Google of discriminating against Russian sources of information:

“The US IT company has taken a strong anti-Russian stance in the information war the West is waging against our country. The video-hosting site acts as a major platform for the spread of fakes and discriminates against official Russian sources of information.”

By blocking RT, the EU aims to silence a critical, non-pro-Western source of information. And not only with regard to the Ukraine war. Access to our website has been made more difficult, several social media have blocked our accounts. It is now up to all of us whether journalism beyond mainstream narratives can continue to be pursued in Germany and the EU. If you like our articles, feel free to share them wherever you are active. This is possible because the EU has not banned our work or reading and sharing our articles.
