In conversation with the President of the EU Council, the Russian President stated that statements by EU representatives on the military solution to the Ukraine conflict are inadmissible. Putin also stressed that the EU was ignoring war crimes committed by Ukrainian nationalists.

EU officials are making irresponsible statements about the need to resolve the crisis in Ukraine militarily. This is what Russian President Vladimir Putin said in a conversation with European Council President Charles Michel website of the Kremlin.

He also told Michel that Brussels was ignoring the war crimes committed by the Ukrainian security forces. The statement on the Kremlin’s website said:

“It is pointed out that Brussels could influence the Kiev authorities to force them to stop the massive shelling of settlements in Donbass and other gross violations of international humanitarian law.”

Putin also responded to Michel’s call for talks with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky. He explained that such a possibility would depend on the results of the ongoing talks between Moscow and Kyiv, in which the Ukrainian side shows “inconsistency” and is unwilling to seek mutually acceptable solutions.

Earlier, on April 8, EU chief diplomat Josep Borrell and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen visited Kyiv. At the time, Borrell had wished for the end of military action in Ukraine and stressed that “this war must be won on the battlefield.” He reminded that Brussels had given Kyiv an additional 500 million euros to buy weapons.

His words were sharply criticized by Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova. In her Telegram channel, she wrote that the EU had transformed itself from an economic organization into the “Department for Economic Relations of NATO”.

A few days later, the EU chief diplomat reiterated that EU countries believe that the conflict in Ukraine can only be resolved militarily and therefore intend to continue supplying arms and ammunition to Kyiv. Borrell explained:

“Wars are usually won or lost on the battlefield. We will talk about expanding aid to Ukraine.”

In addition to the EU, Great Britain, Canada, the USA and Australia also supply arms to Ukraine. Russian Presidential Spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that this will not prevent Russia from achieving its goals in Ukraine.
